Summary

An epic new trilogy begins—a tie-in for the milestone fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series—that stretches from the earliest voyages of the Starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk’s historic five-year-mission…and from one universe to another!

Hidden aboard the U。S。S。 Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T。 Kirk。 Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago…

Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma。 Today, the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world—which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire!

Greg Cox is a Trek literature pro, he nails the characters and adds plenty of reference to existing lore。 This series is going to be grand and it gets off to a great start but it spends a lot of time setting up for the next books。 We meet new aliens on a new planet with new technology taking us out to a new universe which presumably we'll be off exploring in the next chapters。 The plot direction taken right at the end brings in some old friends and reminds me almost exactly of another trek novel Greg Cox is a Trek literature pro, he nails the characters and adds plenty of reference to existing lore。 This series is going to be grand and it gets off to a great start but it spends a lot of time setting up for the next books。 We meet new aliens on a new planet with new technology taking us out to a new universe which presumably we'll be off exploring in the next chapters。 The plot direction taken right at the end brings in some old friends and reminds me almost exactly of another trek novel that I read this year。。。。 but I don't recall which。Petkoff is, as always, fantastic。 。。。more

As a lifelong fan of the original Star Trek I was very impressed by this 50th anniversary tale。 The story goes all the way back to the early days of the Enterprise under Robert April and spends a good deal of time with Majel Barrett’s Number One from the original pilot episode。 The scenes set during the time of the series itself are executed to perfection。 Small things like the yeoman showing up with something for Kirk to sign, or the way the Federation/Klingon relations were handled just felt s As a lifelong fan of the original Star Trek I was very impressed by this 50th anniversary tale。 The story goes all the way back to the early days of the Enterprise under Robert April and spends a good deal of time with Majel Barrett’s Number One from the original pilot episode。 The scenes set during the time of the series itself are executed to perfection。 Small things like the yeoman showing up with something for Kirk to sign, or the way the Federation/Klingon relations were handled just felt so right。 Add to this the excellent narration。 I’ve read my share of Trek books over the years but never listened to one before。 Robert Petkoff was amazing。 His interpretations of the characters were so well done。 Certainly more than just impressions。 Somehow he managed to perform Kirk subtly which I didn’t even know was possible。 Lastly I gotta give huge props to Greg Cox for the SHOCKING twist ending to part one of this trilogy。 I was blown away by what happened in the last minutes of this book and hats off to how he went about doing it。 Probably the best ending to any Trek book I’ve ever read。 。。。more

Great start to this trilogy。 Hope Books 2 and 3 are as good 📚😊

That was fun, exciting and interesting。 The writing was well done and what a cliffhanger!A captain determined to right the mistakes of the past, another determined not to start a war。 An unexpected betrayal by an enemy they weren't expecting。It's cool that we get to learn more about the mysterious Number One from the original unaired pilot episode for Star Trek: Captain Una。 Who still stays mysterious in her own way by way of her actual name being "unpronouncible," Una being a self appointed nic That was fun, exciting and interesting。 The writing was well done and what a cliffhanger!A captain determined to right the mistakes of the past, another determined not to start a war。 An unexpected betrayal by an enemy they weren't expecting。It's cool that we get to learn more about the mysterious Number One from the original unaired pilot episode for Star Trek: Captain Una。 Who still stays mysterious in her own way by way of her actual name being "unpronouncible," Una being a self appointed nickname。 Another interesting point is that the author used "he'er" and "she'im" for pronouns for the slug aliens。 Most authors I figure would use they/them, but this was interesting to read。The narrator did a great job as well。 (I know I have been listening to a lot of audio books lately, but they make work go by a lot quicker。) 。。。more

The book has two main storylines that parallel and reveal secrets about each other。 Can't wait to see how the rest of this trilogy goes。 I would recommend reading Child of Two Worlds first, as Number One is also an important character in that book。 The book has two main storylines that parallel and reveal secrets about each other。 Can't wait to see how the rest of this trilogy goes。 I would recommend reading Child of Two Worlds first, as Number One is also an important character in that book。 。。。more

A refreshing dive into a familiar universe, with familiar characters, well composed, as opposed to modern Trek incarnation on other mediums。 Great read, looks like an excellent start of this anniversary trilogy, can’t wait to enjoy the sequels。

Would have given it 5 stars except for the cliffhanger at the end。 Which might not have been so bad, except my library doesn't have the followup story!I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did a very good job。 I very much wanted to hear how the story ends up, but dang it! Disappointing。Like most other Star Trek novels, I’ve read, this one starts with an interesting premise: Number One, Captain April and interaction between Kirk and Spock’s mentor。 While the story delivers that, it takes far too many words to tell the story。 The lengthy exposition gets in the way of the narrative, making this a chore instead of a pleasure to read。

Not the best Trek, but definitely a return to form of the original series and concepts。 Celebrating the 50th anniversary with this trilogy was a remarkable idea, and looking forward to the next book in this series。

Near Perfect Novel。 I loved getting to read about Una (Number One)。 We get to see her in an antagonistic role, which was cool。 And we see her flashbacks to 18 years prior。 Highly recommended!!

This is part one of a trilogy that looks back into the past of Spock and Number One 18 years prior on the Enterprise under command of Robert April。 On a mission on an unknown planet, Number One, aka Una, leads a landing party that gets into a heap of trouble。 In the process the landing party is lost except for Una plus 4 of the Enterprise bridge crew。 Years later with the ship under Kirk’s command, Una comes aboard and takes a heretofore hidden key to the complex left on the planet 18 years befo This is part one of a trilogy that looks back into the past of Spock and Number One 18 years prior on the Enterprise under command of Robert April。 On a mission on an unknown planet, Number One, aka Una, leads a landing party that gets into a heap of trouble。 In the process the landing party is lost except for Una plus 4 of the Enterprise bridge crew。 Years later with the ship under Kirk’s command, Una comes aboard and takes a heretofore hidden key to the complex left on the planet 18 years before。 It’s a real page turner that keeps you interested throughout the book。 Definitely recommended 。。。more

I thought the story was ok, but did not like the snails as alien invaders, I think it would have worked better with a more human alien enemy。

3。5 StarsInteresting story, hampered by being a setup book to a larger story。 The "voice" of this time period (TOS) was sound。 I didn't like the ending。。。it didn't feel earned。 Wish there had been more bread crumbs。 Oh well, on to Best Dedense。 3。5 StarsInteresting story, hampered by being a setup book to a larger story。 The "voice" of this time period (TOS) was sound。 I didn't like the ending。。。it didn't feel earned。 Wish there had been more bread crumbs。 Oh well, on to Best Dedense。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was ok。 I read it on breaks at work so it took a long time to read, and I didn't feel compelled to read it at all outside of work。 The plot somewhat felt like an excuse to throw all the Enterprise's enemies together for an anniversary special especially with the twist cliffhanger ending。 My problems with it are A) Number One / Una is constantly said to be the best of the best but always making kind of short-sighted selfish decisions。 It's her fault her crew got disappeared to another u This book was ok。 I read it on breaks at work so it took a long time to read, and I didn't feel compelled to read it at all outside of work。 The plot somewhat felt like an excuse to throw all the Enterprise's enemies together for an anniversary special especially with the twist cliffhanger ending。 My problems with it are A) Number One / Una is constantly said to be the best of the best but always making kind of short-sighted selfish decisions。 It's her fault her crew got disappeared to another universe for wanting to James Bond it alone in the first place。 B) The native Usildar are screwed over big time。 No one makes any attempt to consult them or help them after non-interference protocols are proven to be kind of a moot point since they were enslaved by the more technologically advanced Jatohr race。 If the Robert April Enterprise had bothered to help the Usildar at all after the incident where they got the Key maybe they wouldn't have been so pissed off at Una whan she returned。 Guess that would have ruined the plot though。 I hate how Una never even once thinks about helping to return the Usildar's lost people。 No, it's all about her lost crew and BFF。 The Usildar don't really matter to her except as a device to feel righteously angry on their behalf or pity them for their situation and then abandon them。 C) The twist ending with the human Romulan operative felt incredibly cheap。 Plus everyone is saved from trouble at the last minute always by someone else and not their own doing to the point I didn't care about the stakes。 D) There's got to be a better pronoun than s/he。Personally would not have been a favorite anyway because there is barely any McCoy in this book, and when he does appear all he does is whine。I might read the sequels if I see them when I'm out book shopping, but I'm not eager to do it。 。。。more

I absolutely loved getting to know Captain Robert April, and being able to see the different dynamics and relationships on The Enterprise before Kirk and even Pike became the captain。 His line where he refers to his crew as children was very endearing to me。I thought the pacing was a little slow at first but at the end it really picked up。 My favorite part was definitely the banter between Kirk and Spock as they evaded the Klingons。 It was exactly the kind of dynamic I've grown to love and expec I absolutely loved getting to know Captain Robert April, and being able to see the different dynamics and relationships on The Enterprise before Kirk and even Pike became the captain。 His line where he refers to his crew as children was very endearing to me。I thought the pacing was a little slow at first but at the end it really picked up。 My favorite part was definitely the banter between Kirk and Spock as they evaded the Klingons。 It was exactly the kind of dynamic I've grown to love and expect from watching TOS。This is a very promising series。 。。。more

If I could give it a 3。5/5 I would。 I liked this book, and only a handful of issues made me shy away from a "I really liked it" 4/5 rating。 What I Loved: - The author nailed Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the TOS crew。 Every interaction and dialogue they had felt true to the characters。 In all honesty I wish the TOS crew had been more prominent, because they were the best part of the book。 - The alien world and main antagonists were interesting。 It felt like something new without drifting so If I could give it a 3。5/5 I would。 I liked this book, and only a handful of issues made me shy away from a "I really liked it" 4/5 rating。 What I Loved: - The author nailed Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the TOS crew。 Every interaction and dialogue they had felt true to the characters。 In all honesty I wish the TOS crew had been more prominent, because they were the best part of the book。 - The alien world and main antagonists were interesting。 It felt like something new without drifting so far from Trek that it felt out of place。 - There were plenty of fun call-backs to the TOS TV series for fans of the show, that really helped this feel like a true canonical part of the timeline。 One could easily see this book as a being a never-fillmed two or three part episode in the Original Series。 Issues I had with the book: - I think the central character "Number One" is not written compellingly enough to carry the story on her own。 I have a hard time even describing her personality。 She is better than everyone at just about everything, everyone looks up to her, and it doesn't really seem like she has any flaws other than that she arguably cares too much。 I don't want to say her character was unrealistic, so much as it was not compelling。 I found the chapters that focused on her (most of the book) to be the least interesting。 - The side-characters were a mixed bag。 I enjoyed getting a chance to read about Captain Robert April and some of his crew, but for every interesting addition there was another character who seemed to be a basic trope character。 The witty sarcastic best friend character (who's name I have already forgotten) would have been totally forgettable if he had not been so central to the plot。 - The book feels like it was a lot of set-up and very little pay-off。 To be fair, this is only book one in a three part series, so this criticism may fade away after I read book two and three, but for now I left the book feeling a bit unsatisfied and underwhelmed。 In conclusion。。。"Captain to Captain was a fun but flawed book。" I will definitely be reading book two to see if the series picks up in later volumes。 The series has room to grow and improve, and I hope that it does。 If you like Star Trek then you will probably like this book。 If you don't care for Trek at all, I would say this book is probably passable。 。。。more

Again, I am thoroughly amazed at how much the right author and the right story can completely change my opinion about a topic。。。well, I really shouldn't be now that I dwell upon it, for so many authors have been quite influential throughout my life (there are many ideals which have grown into beliefs that I hold dear whose seeds were planted by one author or another)。 I believe that I have previously stated in another review that I was never really much of a fan of "The Original Series" era of S Again, I am thoroughly amazed at how much the right author and the right story can completely change my opinion about a topic。。。well, I really shouldn't be now that I dwell upon it, for so many authors have been quite influential throughout my life (there are many ideals which have grown into beliefs that I hold dear whose seeds were planted by one author or another)。 I believe that I have previously stated in another review that I was never really much of a fan of "The Original Series" era of Star Trek; the camp, low-budget, and inconsistencies really turned me off, but so far this series of books (along with the Vanguard series) have really opened my eyes to how wonderfully refreshing this era of Trek can be。 And they have undone the damage which has been done by some of the much earlier Original Series-era books I have read that have been, shall we say, quite comically farcical (e。g。 Spock as a renowned pirate, sex-symbol, traitor。。。or a species with mid-20th century chemical rockets posing a dire threat to the entire galaxy)。I very much enjoyed the overall plot of this particular novel, what with the conflict between the Jatohr and the Usildar, the nod to environmental damage caused by the introduction of non-native invasive species (which was portrayed particularly vividly and I could visualize without too much effort), and the attempt to make the villains actually multi-dimensional。 I even enjoyed the nod to the Mirror Universe, which is something that I have always particular enjoyed about Star Trek (especially as portrayed in "Dark Mirror" by Diane Duane - but not as portrayed by Deep Space Nine), and almost anything that helps fill in the pieces of that place is welcome。Sadly, I was not much of a fan of Una, a。k。a。 "Number One", a。k。a。 Majel Barret's character from the original Pilot/The Cage, a character whose only flaw is that "they care too much," at least as she is portrayed in this novel。 I also was not overly fond of the ending which comes across as way too "sequel bait"-like, and/or the obligatory "unexpected twist that was never established at any time, any where, by any one, but here we go"。。。However, having said that, I still really enjoyed this read and look forward to continuing on to Book Two in the series。 I would definitely recommend it to any Trekkers/Trekkies out there。 。。。more

Interesting story, but for someone so supposedly bright she certainly is dumb。 Lacks foresight and planning。 Compared to a delta force she is woefully ill trained and proposed。 How did she get to be a captain? And she has lots of emotions that determine her actions while claiming to be more dispassionate than a Vulcan。 Strange that star fleet academy has so many physical competitions like our current colleges。

Decent story in need of a polishInteresting storyline。 The use of Number One and Robert April was welcome。 All in all entertaining enough, but I can't help but think this could have used a more attentive editor who would have pushed the author on a rewrite and some much needed polishing。 It's a good story, just not particularly well told。 Clearly, the author has the chops but didn't get the instruction or time needed to hit the mark。 Decent story in need of a polishInteresting storyline。 The use of Number One and Robert April was welcome。 All in all entertaining enough, but I can't help but think this could have used a more attentive editor who would have pushed the author on a rewrite and some much needed polishing。 It's a good story, just not particularly well told。 Clearly, the author has the chops but didn't get the instruction or time needed to hit the mark。 。。。more

I read (well listened) to the audio book version of this, and while I normally find it hard to keep track of the plot while listening to an audio book, I found it so easy to follow along。 I also found myself closing my eyes and picturing the planet, it's natives, and the 'new comers'。 Can not wait to read the 2nd and 3rd in the trilogy。 I read (well listened) to the audio book version of this, and while I normally find it hard to keep track of the plot while listening to an audio book, I found it so easy to follow along。 I also found myself closing my eyes and picturing the planet, it's natives, and the 'new comers'。 Can not wait to read the 2nd and 3rd in the trilogy。 。。。more

I like the premise, but unless you really like Star Trek you probably won't like this。Una regularly makes really bad decisions for no reason。 Decisions that don't even make sense in the context of the story。 For example, if you have limited time why would you cut through a window but at the next door teleport to the other side? If you were on a clock and knew those coordinates, why not use them from the outset? I listened to this as an audiobook。 The use of nonstandard pronouns to describe some I like the premise, but unless you really like Star Trek you probably won't like this。Una regularly makes really bad decisions for no reason。 Decisions that don't even make sense in the context of the story。 For example, if you have limited time why would you cut through a window but at the next door teleport to the other side? I listened to this as an audiobook。 The use of nonstandard pronouns to describe some aliens assumed to be sexless was unnecessary and made listening to the book confusing。 I thought "She'he" was another character for a while。 Plus, at one point it's made incredibly clear that they pair off into couples and produce offspring so why keep going with the ambiguous pronouns? It felt shoehorned in rather than organic to the story and really detracted from the audiobook listening experience。Overall, it's a light, trashy, read。 It's exactly what I needed after some of the heavy reading I've been doing。 I started the second audiobook but if it doesn't improve soon I'm going to drop it。 。。。more
